Thanks for that Cappy, although as Malcolm says, they don't seem to have 0.6mm !
Malcolm, you love making jigs don't you ! :-)
What I'll have to do is mark up the position of the subframe and original heelboard before I remove them, tack in the new heelboard then replace the subframe and make...
I've got a SIP 105 and the wirefeed is terrible even with the torch and cable held straight out from the machine the feed can be temperamental. I wouldn't buy another one !
HTH
Jim
I know a similar question has been asked before but I can't find the thread so I'm afraid I'll have to ask it again (sorry guys).
For my mini (which has yet again just failed it's MOT) which size wire should I be using ? 0.6 or 0.8mm I'm sure it should be 0.6mm for ~1mm thick panels but I'd...
Usually I find Murex/BOC budget stuff sells at the top end of the 'budget' price range However IMHO I get well more than my moneys worth everytime ! Currently the cheapest auto darkening helmet BOC do is about £122 and thats battery operated (Speedglass helmet) ... still that's cheaper than 6...
I had a look through that ages ago when I was looking for tips on replacing rear quarter panels, I didn't learn much but he's made a bloody good job of the car !
TIG I think, would be ideal for doing the rear quarters on a mini, the but joint where the replacement panel connects to the rear...
Hi Alex, Welcome to the forum.
How long have you had the Moggy ? She looks to be in pretty good nic for her age. A barn find ? I'd agree with Malcolm on fitting whole panels rather than just patching BUT saying that I think you'll have better practice patching as you have to weld some pretty...
Personally (and I don't work for British Standards) I'd say a good O/A weld would be better than a crap MIG weld. I only weld on Minis (classics, none of that German stuff) and Beetles (classics(spot paradox)) and I'm happy enough to O/A on all of them. Classic Minis were made to 1999 and I'm...
Do you think they'll do a TIG kit for it :p
On a more serious note, at that price it'd be worth it just to mess about with Malcolm might even like one if he breaks any more lathes into pieces (!)
Jim
Just try slowing your hands down a bit and see if that improves things.
Let us know how you get on and above all remember, you're only welding scrap at the moment so don't be scared to blow holes right through it, you learn more by screwing things up than you do by getting things right first...
LOL Well that explains why I like metal work !
I was upto 47 and before you ask Yes ! I have, down to 21 now, the sheese wire effect takes it's toll ! and getting interviewed for jobs and having to put bits back in afterward doesn't help If you want to know why ? (you can tell I getasked this a...
Bloody 'Tutors' I thought the whole idea was to teach !
They should start at the begining ie give you an idea of what you're going to 'try' and do, then go through setting up the machine and WHY it's set like that THEN get you to weld something.
Personally I think hobby MIGS are great, not...
Just had a look at Adrians link. The 'Midget Widget'
Quick quote from the site ...
"It comes with an adjustable control handle which can be adapted to operate with the existing range of regulators in use with disposable cylinders."
So it looks like this may be a viable option, providing...
I've never used a TIG in my life but I've been doing a lot of thinking about it and here's what I've come up with so in my opinion ... You'll have at least the same problems with out of position TIG as you do with O/A due to using a filler rod. The use of a foot pedal while working on a car...
You can still get 'Flip Fronts' for minis and they can be fantastic if you're always under the bonnet messing about !
The thing to remember though, with minis just about EVERYTHING supports everything else, so when you remove the front wings and cut away a sizable chunk of the inner wings...
If you follow Malcolm's link to BOC's site click on BOC Book Online and navigate to Home + Gas Equipment + Gas & Welding Accessories + Accessories + MiniMIG Conversion Kit, you'll want one of those to convert from the mini bottles to decent sized bottles. I think the kit costs around £35 but...
For other that may want a Lincoln machine, BOC sell them from their tradequip outlets (they also deliver free !)
http://www.bocindustrial.com/
Click on BOC Book Online (you don't need to login to view the catalogue)
BOC's own machines (from what I've heard) are pretty darn good too ! I'm...
I think I'll stick with minis for the moment then go for an MG when I get the cash and the time. I've never considered anything French purely because they never made anything I liked. I used to have a couple of old Datsuns, not to long ago either, about 8 years ago. A 100A and a 120Y which parts...
Danger, LOTS of fun ... most of the time ... I'd prefer an Aston myself :D but we all have to start somewhere. The mini is cheap and cheerful (at the moment, give it a few years and the value can only go one way !) if I totally screw up fitting a panel a new one isn't going to break the bank...
Thanks Malcolm. The mini needs 'quite a bit' of work :) as they say. The missus and I bought it 2 years ago as a bit of a wreck on eBay with months MOT on her. It failed on ball joints etc and the rear subframe which I replaced and windscreen which I also replaced. Last year however she failed...
