Thanks everyone for the comments.
The background is the client asked what thickness range we could weld to for this joint geometry, I though the range was dictated by material thickness? I've attached the WPQR they were sent, also see their comments below in bold:
As fas as I can see the WPQR is...
Hi Guys, could someone inform me of the rang of qualification for thickness of these tests, the two samples are 15mm and 30mm plate with 8mm chamfer. Many thanks in advance
Yes they were thrilled lol. The machinist was upset because I got him to re-machine the edge prep back onto the re-cuts. Didn't lose any sleep myself though.
Hi all,
Just writing in to say be careful and don't do what I did.
I was witnessing the welding of some test pieces for EN 9606-1, and for got to tell the welders to do a stop and start on both the root and capping run.
Take it easy on me, it's my first time doing this.
Anyway, here are the...
Sorry guys, just logged back in. I think you are getting confused with the optimum angles that would suit better, because the 60° included will be reversed if the assembly is being welded vertically.
Thanks guys. Sorry Richard I should have distinguished the scenario better. We always weld with pipe vert but when the pipe's too long and access to weld it isn't an option, we weld horizontally on a rotating rig like in the picture
Here's a couple of photos to show what I mean.
Hi Guys, could someone please help clear something up.
If you have a 10mm thick circular plate of say 300mm diameter, with a 5mm 45° chamfer on the side, to be welded inside a pipe of the same diameter and thickness, (plate sitting in a couple of inches and totally accessible as pipe will be...
Thanks for the replies guys. I just wanted to clarify from a independent source as I had TWI and Lloyds guys giving quotes and pushing to get all welders coded, obviously there's a fiscal interest there.
I was confused as I can't see any mention of the volume of personnel to be tested in ISO...
Hi guys, I'm having to get a few guys certified to 9606-1, pretty simple.
My question is: if I have 15 welders and I'm going for EN ISO 3834-3 accreditation, how many of the guys do I actually need to get coded?
Many thanks in advance for any replies.
Thanks Brad93.
To be honest, as these are chromoly shafts going into conveyor pulleys/drums, I've been trying to sidestep the whole welding completely and advise customers to use a locking element like KLAB/Ringfeder or taper lock, but they sometimes insist on welding, especially in larger...

Hi guys, the saga continues. It turns out the company had a PQR for butt weld that has a broad range to cover our requirements.
So the boss says onto the next, (I don't think he likes me). I told him that writing welding procedures is something usually reserved for welding Engineers.
He then...
Hi guys, I'm back again to annoy you with more questions regarding welding procedures.
Background: My employer manufactures conveyor pulleys for the materials handling industry. They are looking to acquire ISO 3834-3 and have tasked me as their RWC. The reason they've assigned me, (against my...
Hi all,
I'm (trying) to write a preliminary welding procedure for a butt weld for my employer. Once written I will send a welded sample away for destructive testing at Exova Scotland, I'll also use it to qualify the welders on the shop floor with it. I haven't actually done this before, so if...
Hi guys, I wonder of someone can help me with a few enquiries.
BACKGROUND: My employers are considering manufacturing rollers from aluminium. these are 12" pipe with 1/2" wall thickness and a 1/2" side plate to be welded inside each side of the pipe (fillet).
I'm the one they're looking to as...
Thanks Burdekin, much appreciated. I don't think my colleague and I would worry too much about the course/exam, I recently went back to university to finish my BEng Mech. and my colleague is finishing his engineering HNC next month.
I think you're right in that I should contact them. Although...
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone with CSWIP accreditation, or know the ins and outs help me. My employer is proposing to put me and a colleague through CSWIP 3.1.
While I would be wanting to gain entry via the mature candidates route, (welding for 20 years and welding foreman for 7), my...
