yeah it doesn’t ring true to me but that’s what the literature says so we will see I guess. Still can’t find out what type of arrangement acted on the ram but I’d imagine it was a 12ft breaker bar!
Thread was captive at both ends so appeared to have to preload bearings before screwing in until I realised the whole assembly could be dismantled. Simple job now
Ok I susses it. The ball thread is screwed into the cast steel head. I managed to remove it without drama with some big threaded bar and a few nuts to grab hold of it.
The insert is now out so I can now install the ram at my leisure
Thanks for all your help on this one!
apparently this thing...
Cheers chaps, I had already tried that.
The head has already been removed and I tried feeding the ram in. There’s no room to feed the ball in between the ram and the bore in the head though. Then once you’re a inch or so in the larger ID part of the ram closes off access to the thread entirely!
i thought exactly that but it’s not possible as the bottom of the ram is about 1/2” larger OD than the thread so the piston ring compressor type tool would be trapped in there as the ram was screwed into the head
I picked up this #27 Whitney metal tool Co manual punch last year.
What I’m calling the head has a screw thread. The ram is manually driven through the head and also has a thread. Between the two are 20 or so ball bearings captive in their thread at either end of the ram. The head thread is...
I’d love an old machine but struggling to find a throat less one. Been searching on German eBay but will try French now as well. If not looks like America may be best shot.
Anything to avoid Baleigh!
Thought I’d post an update on this thread.
The shear arrived from Germany within 4 days. It’s an absolute beast. £300 plus £150 shipping and thing thing can seriously comp metal.
I knew I’d have the blades ground or even replaced but even so it’s been cutting 100mm x 5mm flat this morning...
Looking at getting some shears for cutting up to a max of .9 SS.
Need to cut the odd radius as well as straights.
Would I be best off with the throatless type presumably?
Bought the ironworker above. It’ll be on its way from Germany next week. Will let you know how I get on. Gave £300 for it so worth a shot.
Can anyone recommend a firm that can sharpen the blades?
