Thanks
Thanks for all the advice guys it's not easy doing something new without someone to talk to about it. Cheers!
The penetration was not as good as I hoped but it's ok I think.
Thinking now I reckon that the wire speed was varying a bit due to the torch position and the fact that the...
In with the new!
Well, it's done, horah!
Decided to leave the bracket in the end. Have used Fertan on it and will squirt Waxoil in between.
Not overly proud of the welding but I reckon it's strong enough and for a first job... I'll let you decide :-) Please be critical.
It's funny...
The offending hole
The bracket has a threaded hole and is for strapping stuff down I think. It seems to serve no other purpose. As you can see the floor was spot welded to it. Obviously damp has got in between the bracket and the floor and hey presto, a hole.
Got a bit carried away with...
Try Insurance Choice, www.insurancechoice.co.uk, they are a specialist broker. Also ask them what is pushing up the price.
Also try a comparison site, Go Compare springs to mind.
Good luck and let us know for next time around.
Good luck with the MOT mate.
Will be interesting to see the pics. I'm doing repairs on my van at the moment and still wondering what to do:
Do I weld from the top or bottom or butt weld etc...
Some pics:
1st pic topside of test sheet with my best effort with 0.8mm wire on the left (stop start welding as I said before). The 2 welds on the right are 0.6mm wire and continuous welds from start to finish without blow through - I'm so chuffed :-))
2nd pic is of the reverse side (left...
Thanks, that was 'sort off' the technique I was using only I was 'pulling' the torch and just laying test welds. I'm not yet joining things. Slowly, slowly...
Just nipped to Halfarts to pick up some 0.6. Will try that now.
Also I'm outside on a workmate so that does not help, my gas is...
Food for thought there, thanks chaps.
Specially like the tray idea.
I'm using a Clarke 100E mk2 with Argon mix (15% CO2 2% 0)
Just practising laying some welds today for the FIRST TIME!!! :-))
It's going OK, difficult to weld for more that a couple of seconds at a time without the...
Right, must be careful not to cut the hole too big! Otherwise, it could be a long story...
Was also thinking about welding a flange onto the patch to let it in if you get me, like a joddle. Is this a valid thing to do or...
Hmm, got me thinking now.
Say I tack a flange to the patch...
Ha ha, nice pic and shocking. It's all in the eye of the beholder/tester then. I only hope I can do better.
If it turns out that I'm crap and can only achieve bird poo, I give up and get a pro to do it, or scrap the van, whichever is cheaper :-(
Magnet - doh! Sorry for my stupidity, I'm new to all this.
I happen to have a couple of broken speakers so that should do while tacking in place.
Intergrips, they look interesting and I see how they work thanks to a very high resolution drawing ;-)
Yep, when I get grinding I will see...
Cheers guys
Tom, wow, nice work!
It is a Mk5 and the hole is some distance from the spring hanger about, 4" in front of the rear wheel arch and 2" from the side. Sadly within 30cm of the hanger though.
Bit worried about the ex-tester's point of view. I'll see how my test welds go and...
Yep, I'll post some pics if I can.
If this was not my first job I would prefer a butt joint, as you said Keith, or weld from both sides. Either would be a better and cleaner job but maybe unnecessary from a structural point of view.
It is still down to the testers interpretation of "must...
Found this in the MOT manual
http://www.motuk.co.uk/mot_appendix_c.htm
"the repair must appear to be virtually as strong as the original structure with only continuous seam welding being acceptable for patch repairs (even if the patch extends beyond the prescribed area)."
So, a...
Thanks Keith, nice post, thanks :-)
You have described my question better than me, it's the look of un-welded edges from the underside that worries me. I will cut out the rot to a square ish hole so that the hole has clean edges.
I'm sure that a overlap weld will be just as strong (if not...
Thanks,
I think I will do an overlap weld. Is that is acceptable? This will be my first welding job so I think that a butt joint will be asking for trouble at the moment. Although I can see that that would be better all round as it would be clearly visible from underneath and wont just look...
Thanks, I can show the tester the weld from above before I fit the flooring.
What happens next year when the inside is fitted out? Will it be OK to stone chip the underside to cover the patch so the inspector won't question it again?
Sorry for the stupid questions.
Oh, and I don't mind...
