You do need to be very careful when welding metal that has been coated with zinc, Metal Fume Fever can cause serious health problems, the amounts you encountered would seem to small to cause any problems. Drinking milk before symptoms of Fume Fever starts is a good idea...
I got a load of steel from Dyfed Steel delivery was £15 this year I live about 50 miles from their depot they deliver Monday's and Friday depending on how full the lorry is.

A 17mm spanner with heavy duty stamped on it, that I bent into a u shape with my bare hands, also a Black Spur automatic wire stripper that snapped 1st time i used it on very light household cable, must have seen me comming, should have been top quality for 79p:laughing:

Mine should be arriving today, hope it's ok, Hugh F seems fine with his, Essex Steam have been selling them on Ebay as well, feedback shows they have sold a number of them since at least Jan 07 without major problems, if you look on their site you can see them using one themselves, hope this...

of the steel used it looks about 1" also do you use a certain type of steel for this kind of work. That welding looks amazing, how far do you aim to penetrate into the steel, and finally what welder do you use...

The wheels are reversible should just slip off, it's best to use the size of groove that matches the wire .6 wheel could damage the .8 wire and interfere withe the weld.

Starting a new rod is always more difficult I keep a thick piece of threaded bar on my welder and when I start a new rod I put the threaded bar in the earth clamp and run the new rod up and down it until it stops catching and begins to weld, avoids getting those little black arc track marks on...
