I`m happily welding away at my old vw campervan , and suddenly wondered " do i need to disconnect the batteries (2) ? and if so , why ? and what may have happened to my alternator ? " --
all seems ok to me ! Any comments please ?

Lexi , i just welded a wee patch -- first time ever -- with my clarke 160 , but did not disconnect batteries ( tis a ole campervan , arrr , 1986 vw ) or alternator (or fridge or zig unit ) ---- is this really important ?? :confused: jaylo
Thanks , Shenion , good advice --- now i must own up to having tested my welder using the 200v AC (:ashamed::ashamed::ashamed:) bit of my tester -- on DC , the readings are much lower , and all seems ok except my brain, which HURTS , and my welding , which obviously needs a lot more practice ...
Remembered how to start a thread , finally , and here is one i butted in on earlier -- readings taken with voltmeter at ^^200v, pos on wire/tip, neg on "earth" clamp, wire not feeding through ---

Peter and Malcolm , i checked the voltmeter readings , with wire in but guide roller "disconnected" , and got the following :

oh, and btw again , the best wee car i ever had was a renault 4 :artist:, took hay , carried goats , pigs , calf , climbers , furniture with it ,and even rescued a land rover in deep snow ! jaylo

I used VACTAN on my trailer and campervan , comes highly recommended from camper forum :eyepatch:, seems ok ,follow it with grey epoxy primer .
BTW ,the zinc-rich , weld-thru primer does not give a good adhesion to metal , only use it where you can`t get other stuff like vactan or...
