Hi all,
I know this is an old post but that's how long it has taken me to finish the job. I also noticed that if you search for "discovery rear body crossmember welding" on google this is the first hit, So thought I should update it with the results even if they are rather late.
Job was...
Wow. That resulted in quite a debate.
I now have plain CO2 again and I'm getting on as before.
Out of interest I did some experiments with new clean new panals and found that the co2 just does not seem to make them as hot and I can produce a longer bead before the puddle starts looking to...
I did notice that I needed to turn the knob more before I got any gas. Not lack of gas though as tried with it off and made some nice bird poo just to be sure. :)
Cheers for advice all.
Have tried all those accept the thinner wire. I'll give it a go tomorrow with 0.6, If not then I'll get a couple more co2 bottles. Even the thin metal technique blows through some of the crap panels I'm joining. :)
Cheers for quick reply madkayaker.
I'm on the lowest setting and have tried dropping the wire speed. Any slower and it burns back up the wire. :(
Looks like I am better off getting some more co2 and saving the argon mix for if i do any thicker metal in the future.
cheer again.
I have been welding 1mm car body panels with a Clarke 135TE. I have been getting on fine with it using the disposible Co2 bottle that came with it. That ran out today and I switched to Argon/Co2 mix. (got them as i thought they were meant to be better and were the same price as co2).
Now when...
Cheers again for input all.
Managed to get some more done today. Crossmember is now in and bolted to chassis and welded to d-pillars.
Still need to address the gap between the crossmember and the the boot floor but I already have the panel to do it. I managed to get the boot floor lip to...
shameless bump
shameless bump..
Anyone? Even if you cant help with any local knowledge, Please let me know if the air products price is reasonable.
Cheers again
Thanks for the input all....
I have taken out all the rot now and there's a bit more hole than I orginally thought. I have ordered more steel as looks like I will be making up some patches. It's going to to take a little longer than i thought.
The shiney black/rusty patches did mostly...
Hi,
Please can anyone help me with gas in the peterborough area?
Air products will do me a 10kg bottle for £45 then 8 per month rental. Is that a good deal?
Cheers
Wastedd
cheers for relpy.
I'm sure cutting back another inch would be the 'right' thing to do but that last inch will take me from the flat panel to the currugated section. Also the panel I have got will exactly butt up to where I have cut too.
Keeping in mind the disco most likely only have...
Hi all, I have been lurking for a while and got load of great info, so thx for that, but now I have a coulpe of questions.
My first welding project is to replace the rear body cross member on my discovery, Not the easiest job to begin with I know.
I have got the old one mostly out and I'm...
