Well I'm getting somewhere now, I have consistent reasonable looking welds.
Vertical up, uphand with a 'C' motion facing downward.
Turns out I was using crappy gear, I borrowed a big fat kemppi machine, 200a but the size of a fridge, an hour later I had tidy welds.
Dc electrode - about 70 amps...
I should say at this point that when I used the oerlikon rods things improved a lot, most likely down to the rods being better quality.
Yes I can get a good weld every time in position and horizontal.
Ok point taken, I was under the impression that down was easier than going up, I wasnt...
Ok thanks.
After some more practice with better rods I'm realizing where I'm going wrong.
It looks as though after all it is the rod angle, as the rod shortens its more & more tricky to see the angle, I tried pulling the rod away while welding & keeping the angle a few times and theres a point...
I've never run 7010, 7018 yes and I'd like to get some 7014.
I can now get reasonable looking vertical welds.
Also I now have some oerlikon 6013's.
I tested the messer picotig by shorting the output and monitoring the current with a Dc clamp meter, below 60a its fine, above 100a its fine, around...
Thanks guys.
I often get whatever the maintenance department has at the time, 6013's seem to be everywhere, some places have 6010, and 7018 but here in the Uk 6013's are common.
I guess I could carry a box of rods with me, more space I havent got, my local weld supplies stocks oerlikon.
I've...
Ok so I need to get my terminology right.
Downhand is with the rod pointing down at the ground and the weld going up, am I correct.
So what I'm doing is uphand going down as the rod is pointing at the sky and I'm welding downhill.
Anyway in the past 20 minutes I've improved a lot, and want my...
The rods are rutile.
I want to weld down as a 'welder' told me these rods are only good for going down hand.
Also I have some rods that state vertical down, these do work well, so its more a case of me not knowing the rod than being able to do it, or at least I hope.
Welding horiz I usually have...
Ok another learning question.
I'm fairly good with Mig, occasionally I come across situations where I only have a stick weld set and some 6013's.
I've been practicing with my messer picotig 140 and some easystrike 2.5mm 6013 rods on some 1/8" steel tread plate, horizontal no probs, vertical I...
The reief valve is likely to be under the hex head rather than the slot head.
I agree with the comments on if the cyclinder piston seal was worn it'd be leaking oil, the cylinder within the jack will be single acting, ie no connection to the upper (annular) side of the cylinder, so if the...
Understood, such an amp is usually used in venues where a fan sound wouldnt matter.
Bet your neighbours love you with a thousand watts of thump bash going on.
I sold/repaired crowns, the ones I repaired were ones that had been dropped or bashed.
The only other amps I liked at the time were HK, for the money really good.
Couldnt you put a fan in that runs flat out all the time?
You can get fans with a built in thermistor and you can get them with a remote thermistor for attaching to a heatsink.
Did someone mention crown XT?, you'd have to go a long way to get a better amp.
Yes there will just be some ripple on the dc.
The alt is a seperate device just for welding so there is no connection to the vehicles electrics, the hf start is transformer coupled so everything is isolated, besides theres no microprocessor on a '62 landy.
The weld current comes from a 180a vahicle alty, uses around 5hp from the engine.
The hf isnt synced to the ac, well actually its pulsed dc from the alty's rectifyer, does that really matter, if you pull the trigger away from the job it wouldnt be synced, I could sync it using the reset pin on...
This circuit did work and has worked well for a while.
Its part of a weldernator type setup on a vehicle and does mig/tig/mma, the whole thing runs from 12v.
I built one of these too,to carry my at the time old and sick dog, he loved it.
I too used a quick release connctor to join the trailer to the bike, mine was a pcl pneumatic fitting, I used a piece of rubber hose to join that to the trailer, the flexibility improves things a lot, theres also a...
There is a law that states you cannot weld on a vehicles steering or certain brake components, but its not a competancy thing, you cant do it at all, if you want diffo steering bits you can make them out of billet, but not welded parts.
There is a garage which I shouldnt mention locally that...
