My commuter car strategy is to buy a 1 to 2 year old car then run it for 8 to 10 years, doing 15k miles per year, that has worked out pretty cost effectively for the last three cars as they have all needed just minimal servicing which I do myself and cam belt changes.
This time I was hankering after an electric car, the daily commute is 45miles Monday to Friday and 35miles Sat and Sun.
When enquiring about cars like the Leaf I was told that this was too much usage for the batteries to have a decent lifetime and that I would have to change the battery at least once over my predicted ownership so I knocked that idea on the head.
Instead I bought an 18month old Golf Bluemotion and not only am I really very very happy with the decision it has also changed my driving style. Having the MPG front and centre all the time kind of sets you a challenge.
Anyway my long term average is sitting at 71mpg and my journey from Dunfermline to the centre of Edinburgh and back last Sunday evening was exceptional.
Its not often you can beat a manufacturer combined cycle when you actually do a combined cycle drive.
