Hi;
I'm very close to painting my classic Mini resto and I'm sure I asked these questions some time back but can't find the info so thought I'd best check.
I will be painting the underside in a couple of steps, rear end first, then middle and later the front end.
I am also nearly ready to do the inside of the car and will some time later be doing the outside.
Just need to confirm what I am planning to do is OK and ask a few associated questions.
Underside: Epoxy Mastic / Stone Chip
1. I have already applied a first coat of Jotun 87 Epoxy Mastic Primer (hammered in with a brush as recommended on here), this coat was then smoothed with a foam roller while it was wet. This coat has been on the car since August last year (then had to put the project on hold).
Q. I know I need to key this coat before I apply another coat, what grade?
2. Next I'll be seam sealing.
Q. If I key the Epoxy before applying the seam seal should I clean up first with White Spirits or Panel wipes.
Q. How long do I need to leave the seam sealer on before applying another coat of Epoxy on top.
3. Next step using U-POL Gravitex Stone Chip this will be applied using a Shutz Gun.
Q. The Gravitex has been in my cupboard for 6 months, will it be OK?
4. Next a second coat of Epoxy primer.
5. Next U-POL Gravitex Stone Chip.
6. Next Cellulose Top coat.
Q. How many top coats will be needed and will cellulose be OK on top of the Gravitex?
Q. For added protection I will be applying stone chip on the outside of the sills, where they meet the door step, should I use the Shutz or should I spray it on smooth, what would look best? Or should I not stone chip and just use celly primer and top coat?
Inside the Car
Q. I have replaced most of the floor so this will be painted with Epoxy primer either Jotun if I have enough or HMG from a local supplier?
Q. If my Jotun is running short can I use Jotun for the first coat, then seam sealer and then HMG epoxy or Cellulose Primer over this and then Cellulose Top Coat?
General
Q. When painting what are the timings between coats, think someone said each coat can be applied as soon as the previous coat has flashed, to add to adhesion and avoid having to key.
