Problems with gas.slight porosity welding carbon steel, but huge porosity welding over a previous run.
done a small bit of stainless work last week,no huge problems first but a few welds were a shade darker than they should have been.cleaned up fine, put it down to slight leak.
bit of carbon to do this week, dreaded porosity. Checked and rechecked every connection.inside and outside machine about 20 joints as i modified the machine and torch to suit each other.redid a few connections with those eared hose clamps, ran out of them, ordered more.redid some gas lines while at it.the porosity went away for a bit but returned.
the regulator was a preset parweld one, with flow fixed and a flow meter attatched, but surged an awful amout at start up.measured 20lpm at the torch and settled down to 5 .inefficient is one thing but i was afraid the surge was drawing in O2 which would screw with porosity too.to be sure i bought a standard single stage adjustable today and could now control the surge but still porosity. Have a spare welder and torch so hooked them up to see if i could pin it down,no luck.2 hours of gas and half a can of leak detector spray gone so far.only thing left is the bottle.has to be?but its rarely the problem.
brought the half full bottle to the depot and relayed my suspicions to the people at the counter.moisture or something i thought
no,not possible.....never happened us here.never even heard of it happening.
Paid for a new bottle, brought it home, bingo.clean welds.
rang the depot, fuming, and deja vu.memory came back of this happening 2 bloody years ago.
Manager came on the phone and apologised, said hed refund the last bottle.said sometimes oxygen in minute percentage gets in.
tell that to the tarts in the office with my money
3 days its took me to find the problem.the new regulator, lines, fittings ive replaced.hung up and phoned boc for quotes.
my rental year is up in a couple of months.in may i will return their bottles, they will be thrown over the gate in the general direction of the office.
