Hello,
I have a knife I would like to keep using and it has a crack in the blade near the tang. It goes from one side to the other and is about 1/3 the height of the full blade.
I was wondering if it can be repaired? I am tempted to tig weld it (this is why I am posting to the tig section) but I am not
sure if mig or even brazing would do the trick. I cant help think tig welding the tiny gap might pull the metal in and that perhaps brazing might be better as I can fill the crack in with filler rod (I know I could do this with tig but I am still a tig novice! Brazing might be easier and give a nicer result.).
I dont know the type of steel it is made from but it has a slight Damascus steel type pattern to it.
Has anyone attempted to fix a crack in a knife blade? If I tig/mig or braze will I have to harden the steel so it keeps an edge after my messing about?
Any pointers are welcome.
K.
