Workshop stool

Inspired by Jody at weldingtipsandtricks.com I have made myself a workshop stool

From this;

to this;

As Jody suggested, although I welded the top nut, I left the bottom nut relatively loose so that the bolt doesn't bind up;

I've left the top plate cos my mate, who is a carpenter, is going to carve me a seat moulded to my very own butt's contours


(p.s. I know the welding quality ain't great - once I've got a stool to sit on I'm sure the greater comfort will improve my welding!)

That had cold water in it so that I could put my fingers in it when I forget that a nut that has been angle-ground to an inch of its life has a surface temperature comparable to the centre of the sun

Ha, it's not just me that's does that then!! I'm thinking of a second career as a diamond thief since I started welding as I don't have fingerprints left on many fingers nowadays

Indeed! My subconscious knows that recently welded metal is hot, but it's too stupid to realise that grinders generate heat

It might just be the camera but the three legs don't look evenly spaced?

I have the same design stool, but in wood. It doubles up as an adjustable stand for supporting long lengths of metal when cutting with the bandsaw

I long ago found that everything I do to metal makes it either hot so it burns me or sharp so it cuts me and sometimes even both.

Good spot When Jody did his, he put plate down each side of the hex nut so he six sides to play with. Because I used box section, I only had four sides.
So I put one of the legs on a flat side, and the other two went on two corners, so it's got a slight splay.

If I was fooling myself, I'd say it was by design - means you can get your feet comfortably in front of you without fouling the stool legs

Very much so! Amazing how much easier it is to lay down a decent bead. I still mad a couple of crap welds, including one with a ton of porosity (must have been to far away from the work), but they were easy to sort.

The biggest difference between this and my old wind-up SIP is being able to select whatever amps I wanted.
