The Axminster mill is a standard Chinese pattern. Its one up from the famous Mini Mill and doesnt skimp on material. It has an abundance of spares available and super low cost and lots of open source upgrades.I’ve narrowed my search down to two mills currently and would ask if anyone has any experience or knowledge about them please..
I am limited space wise so need a bench top type.. preferably with a square column a drilling chuck option a dro .. Chatter free hopefully, uses for cutting slots and facing etc, materials of use = mild steel and aluminium ..
This one is from a Bristol based company.. You can have a DRO for a few hundred more £…

And this is a Axminster mill.. Twice the cost of the EMV model above.. at approximately £3000..

What I can say Axminster’s back up is superb as i have a auto hacksaw from them..
Appreciate any advice as i’ve no experience on mills at all..
Thank you..
I want to cooy this one, I like how its easily removable and driven from the headstock.
I almost bought a big Italian Bridgeport clone, the deal was in the process, but the big boss canceled it at the last minute.I thought you already had a full size mill?
Yes I was watching that one and then half way through he uses the big one and makes me wonder why he is bothering to use the vertical slide?
It is a good video, very well made, attention to every detail.
Also this is worth watching
I want to make a toolpost spindle tho I wont use a mains universal dc motor for it.
I think they are good for high speed cnc machining and wood routers/engravers, but they are not geared. They will be very low torque high speed spindles so only good for tiny cutters.I would look at a ready-made spindle from Vevor, 2.2 or 3 kW
Looks solid. How can I find one on AliExpress or what is it called more precisely?I think they are good for high speed cnc machining and wood routers/engravers, but they are not geared. They will be very low torque high speed spindles so only good for tiny cutters.
I have a cnc lathe milling spindle but will take some effort to attach. Infact it has been sitting long enough I might open it up and see if I can do anything about the splined drive and remove the collar.

Locking collar easily removed and bearings appear good, I wont touch the preload collar nut. Need to buy or make up a splined pulley!
That particular one is a VDI live tooling Collet holder.Looks solid. How can I find one on AliExpress or what is it called more precisely?
Not cheap, but cheaper than homemade. this option is for steel. We need to study this issue more deeply. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...lgo_pvid=25418ef0-116b-46e9-8547-a08caf91e054O! https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803339009730.html?gatewayAdapt=fra2usa4itemAdapt
Vevor has a similar spindle

Yes VDI live driven tool. Occasionally they pop up on ebay, I paid £32 or something silly.Looks solid. How can I find one on AliExpress or what is it called more precisely?
Quick change tapping collets, I use them on the Chiron....., special collets needed I guess....
Cautionary (and entertaining) tale about Chinese machine spindles here. (Link to youtube video)If you're wanting a more suitable spindle for steel milling, I'd go for something like this - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000837824999.html
