New to site and new to welding, I did my apprenticeship in the civi side of the REME which included alot of welding of different kinds but never MIG or TIG, I will be about to start doing some blacksmith work and welding. I am looking at a Cebora boxer on ebay have put a bid in and at the moment winning, if not I will be looking again. I hope to be asking your advice in the near future hope I don't blow myself up or burn my nice new garage down.

Hi, can I pick your brains please?

I was thinking of getting an inverter, not for serious stuff, just for garden bits and pieces and I came accross a neat little inverter from Güde (or Guede if you don't have a ü). Here is the website http://www.guede.ws/cgi-bin/twinklec...=page&tid=8000

The GX 100 model seems to tick a lot of my boxes, small, light and around €120. Comes with leads but no rods/mask/etc.

It seems like it's made in Germany but doesn't explicitly say so but neither does it say those dreaded words ¨Made in China¨
What does the team think?

I tried experimenting with wire speed and fine volts, but no joy.
The (bigger) Miller machine I've used was much cleaner - does this vary from welder to welder, or are there any tips you can give me?
Advice much appreciated,

My better half has decided that we need a heated towel rail in the bathroom. Despite my insistence that this would be no problem for me to do, she sees plumbing as some sort of dark art and has, therefore, commissioned a local plumbing firm to do the work.

Well, in fact, she has now commissioned two local firm - the first one missed their first appointment (to provide a quote) by exactly one week. Three weeks later (after we phoned them) they finally provided the quote and which we duly agreed to proceed with. Three weeks further on, they phoned us (two days before they were due to fit said radiator) to say that the part would not be in on time so they wouldn't be fitting as agreed!! After a very blunt call from me to their boss, it turns out that the issue was more around manpower than availability of parts, so I told them to return my deposit - I would do the job myself.

Of course, the missus still wasn't happy with that proposal, so she sought a quote from another local plumbing firm. Now, these guys did make their appointment to provide a quote and rang back the same day to quote us - all looking good - job booked.

They were due to fit yesterday and we had arranged for them to be on site at 09:30. Well, their 'engineer' arrived at 12:45. He then removed the old rad and replaced four tiles before announcing that he needed to go out and get the rad valves. Given that out local Screwfix is a ten minute drive away, I am surprised that it actually took him a further two hours to return. Then, at 15:45, he announced to my wife that it was, "getting a bit late" and duly f***ed off.

Of course, he wasn't using the time to fit in his own little PJs, was he!!! Anyway, I got on the phone to his boss and duly blew my top. He agreed that it's not acceptable - but won't do anything about it, "I'll speak to him" was his best response.

They say there's a recession on - but - based on my experience - that surely can't be the case for the plumbing trade. I'm now at the end of my tether - I have to take (another) day off of work to accommodate their incompetence / work shy staff!!!

So, this weekend, I really think I'll do the job myself.

Sorry for the rant but (getting to the question here) our system is a sealed combi boiler system. I'm pretty comfortable with draining this - turn off boiler, turn off all power and gas to the boiler, attach hose to the drain point in the hall, open the drain tap and drain externally. I just wonder if there is anything that I may have missed with that.

Also, refilling shouldn't bee too hard - all drains and bleed valves closed, fill via filling loop, get pressure up to about 1.5 Bar, bleed rads - repeat until all the air is out and the system maintaining 1.5 Bar. But, again, would be grateful for any words of wisdom that may save me from disaster.

Sorry for the rant - and sorry if you're a plumber - I'm sure there are good ones out there (just not in our area, it would appear).

Cheers,

Ian.

First i'd like to thank the guys that have been working on the SIP wire feed issues, you were a great help.

Today after reading some posts on sticky wire feed i decided to have a go at sorting mine out, I've had the welder for about 12 years and its never really welded how i want.

So with the help of the info on this site, i fixed my wire feed issue with a bit of ali plate to brace the wire feed bearing and some curtain wire for a new torch liner.

The SIP now welds better than when i bought it, and all for the grand total of .... dig this ... 99p and a trip to dunelm :D:D

Thanks again guys.
