I’m now looking for a mig to do bodywork on an old car of mine and not only.
I think I narrowed it down to the following three.
But which of the three, and why, is my question
The more I look the more confused I get

PORTAMIG 235 Amp
Lincoln Powertec 231C
LORCH M-PRO 210 Synergic MIG Welder

Honestly I cant believe this, finally managed to save enough to sort out and afford the volkzone offer, just got home with the cylinder pleased as punch, other than the fact they didnt sell the cylinder key (so that'll be ebay) but I've just gone to fit my regulator and set up to find the following!

and

aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgh So now I have to wait for both a key AND an adaptor to come in the post.

I knew that the regulator I have came off a BOC cylinder, I didnt know there were different connections between argon and co2 cylinders!

Why the hell is this or is my usual cynical brain right this time that it's so they can make more money!!

Hi guys and gals, I've got a couple of questions I'm hoping some of the experienced welders can help me with.

Warping; to seam or not to seam.
I'm talking about car body work here so fairly thin metals. So far from my limited experience I've never dared try and seam things for fear of too much heat warping the panel. The car that I've been working on is an old e36 BMW and the thinnest metal I've found on external skins is about 1.2mm or so, so I could get a seam going without blowing holes, it's just I choose not to. Instead I build up tacks while pausing every little while.
Obviously if it's soo thin that blowing holes is an issue then the thin metal technique should be used and therefore no chance of a continuous seam, but what about when it's that little bit thicker? Experience of warping? Any general rules you guys follow?

Thanks

I was having a scan on the net last night and noticed Chesterfield College did a variety of Welding Courses, so i gave them a call today and had a chat with one of the lecturers and have decided to enrol on one. (i have checked with SWMBO and i've been given the green light)

I explained to the chap it was purely to imrove my skills for my hobby as opposed to needing to gain a qualification for a job\employment. I said i've done some MIG but i'd really like to improve my TIG welding so he suggested a Level 2 ABC Award would be best as its much more pracital based with little written work required.

It runs for 13 weeks 2 nights a week for 3 hours each night and costs £330 which i didnt think was bad at all.

It starts in a weeks time and i'm really looking forward to it!

Wish me luck!!

I'm going to respray my Ford Anglia, but I don't know how much paint I'll need.

I've stripped the underside to bare metal, painted it in epoxy primer and then stone chip. However, the rest of the shell needs painting including the engine bay, interior, and inside the boot.

How much epoxy primer should I buy for the entire shell minus the underside, and how much base coat and lacquer for everything including the underside?

Thanks in advance.

Hi I'm a complete newbie, but I am looking into doing some modifying to my truck in the near future that will consist of a lot of welding so I would like to start learning.I will be welding a few 1/4" brackets to axles, to the frame, and the rest will be 3/16 inch steel. My question Is a 140 welder good enough or should I step up to a 180 ish welder? I don't have 220 and I cant get it pulled in my current place(shouldn't be here much longer though). Also what is the current opinions on Hobart? Is a good welder? I'm a newbie and a beginner so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I have just got hold of a 'KENDE Mag-150R' Mig welder (see attached photo 1) & I can't seem to get the set-up right !!!
I've tried adjusting the wire feed settings (see attached photo 2, for what seemed to work best) & every time I get close to a sizzling bacon sound it stops feeding & jams !!! Can anyone help/advise me ??? PLEASE ???
I've tried it on 17V & 18V and I can't get any decent penetration either !!! All I get is a tall weld on the top of the plate & a small scorch mark on the back !!!
I'm running it on CO2 (at about 40 litres per minute) as well NOT Gas-less !!!
I've looked through the tutorials Over & Over & Over but I can't seem to replicate them !!!
Also I'm not getting a 'weld pool' in the metal either !!!

I'm completely stumped as to what I'm doing wrong - HELP ME PLEASE !!!

Thanks in advance,

I've got a Clarke 150 turbo welder and for years I've all ways used co2 pub bottle gas and the cheapest wire that I could find.
these type of consumables are OK for wrought iron etc .
but for motorcycle grab rails etc well let say I wanted some improvements.
on heavier stuff I needed to get heat into the job for it to penetrate and consequently got a built up off welds .
which I had to grind the surplus off.
I got told by Gordon(forum member from Skelton) to try Lincoln wire so I did.
got a hell of a improvement ..better welds and less spatter.
I then ran out of co2 gas:mad: at the time I had a lot of work to get out.
anyway ask around to where I can get it refilled ..no luck at this point.
then a guy in the bike shop said he has a large bottle of argon/co2 mix that I can have for £30 and it was full.
connected that up and started welding WOW I could not believe it!
my welds are so smooth/neat and a good penetration to .
you can see the penetration from the other side of the plate(the scale was lifting of which I never got before)
you would've thought I should have known this after more than 35 years of welding, not time served mind.(well I did but it didn't occur to me that this would be better for my DIY stuff to)
and I thought I was a shitty welder at home but good welder at work:whistle:
now I know why.
mmm do I really need that portamig??
I'm going to get it any way(portamig) after reading good write up on it.
I'm not very good at this waiting game Hurry Up weldquipe!
